Game description

The Sega CD port of Mortal Kombat came out a year after the initial five port release during the Mortal Monday. Since the violence controversy of the game was ended at that point, the game was released uncensored, thought it was possible to restore the censored version, with censored fatality identical to the Sega Genesis port.

Mortal Kombat is a one and one fighting game in the same vein as Street Fighter II. You select a character and you fight a two out of three round against every character, including a mirror match.

Then, three endurance matches are introduced. Those are fights against two characters that you fight one at a time. Your health is not restored between the two opponents has fought them is considered a single round. Mortal Kombat is well known for its fatality, which is hidden move performed at the end of the match against the loser.

Each character has one unique fatality, except Goro and Shang Tsung. There is also a Pit Fatality, the first stage fatality in the series, but it isn’t acknowledged as a finishing move unless you perform Liu Kang fatality in that stage.

The Sega CD port is an enhanced version of the Sega Genesis. While the graphics are very similar, more frames were added to every character and animated background element that were missing are brought back. More voice effect was added, such as Liu Kang’s unique cry when doing the Flying Kick or Rayden’s Torpedo. The music is taken from the official Mortal Kombat soundtrack CD, which in turn is directly taken from the arcade original. However, many of the tracks are playing in the wrong background and the “Finish Him/her” loops is replaced by the jingle that play when the first opponent is defeated in an endurance match. A unique music is played during Shang Tsung fight, which come from the 8-bits, Amiga and DOS Port of the game. It is a remix of the Warrior’s Shrine stage.

Since this port of Mortal Kombat was released on CD, there is the unavoidable effect of loading time. It happens between each match (each round for endurance, Goro and Shang Tsung), when the first opponent of an endurance match is defeated and a rather long delay when Shang Tsung transform to another charter or back to himself.

On Earthrealm, a tournament is being held on Shang Tsung’s. 500 years before the current time, Shang Tsung was banished and came back with the half-human half-dragon Goro, to take control of the tournament. For 500 years, Goro held the title of champion and was undefeated. However, everything changed when the current time tournament is held, as the seven fighters who stand above the other in that tournament changed everything.

Those seven fighters are Johnny Cage, Kano, Rayden, Liu Kang, Scoprion, Sub-Zero and Sonya Blade. Liu Kang’s ending, which states he defeated Goro and Shang Tsung to give the tournament back to the original owner, is considered canon.
