Game description
Mortal Kombat 3 is the third game in the Mortal Kombat series, and the first game that appeared on the Playstation. Contrary to popular belief, the Japanese only version of Mortal Kombat II for the Playstation came after MK3.
Mortal Kombat 3 continue the story from the previous game. After losing at the hand of Liu Kang, Shao Khan enact his ultimate plan, known as the 10 000-year-old-plan. With his Shadow Priests, led by Shang Tsung, he would revive his former queen, known as Sindel, who died unexpectedly before the game storyline. Instead of reviving her in their home realm, the OutWorld, she would instead be reborn on Earthrealm. This move allows him to cross the boundary lines set by the Elder Gods and reclaim Queen Sindel. At the same time, Earthrealm would slowly fuse with Outworld and countless people’s souls would be stripped. Protected by Raiden, a group of Earthrealm Warrior will attempt to stop Shao Khan at all cost. Raiden himself can’t follow them beyond Earthrealm dues to merging and influence of the Outworld Elder Gods. Defeating Shao Khan and his army will restore humanity on Earthrealm.
Mortal Kombat 3’s gameplay is similar to the previous game, featuring the 2 punches and 2 kicks (high and low). It also retained a button to block move, and gave more finishers move for the cast.
Many features are added. Each character are able to perform preset combo that, in some case, can be mixed with regular or special moves. It also introduces the run button and gauge bar, which change the paces of the game.
Like MK2, MK3 has a few hidden features, such as the use of Kombat Code that alter the gameplay in 2 players matches and secret arena to fight both secret character. The Playstation version has additional cheats to alter features and to play as Smoke.
The Playstation port of MK3 is close to the arcade version. It features all the gameplay, musics, graphics and sounds from the arcade original. Its main drawback is loading time between matches and when Shang Tsung morphs. In the latter case, a special switch is dedicated to him in the options menu. It can be set to either disallowing Tsung to morph, allow him to only morph against his opponent (no loading) or freely morph (load each time he morphs into a character and when he morphs back as himself).
