Mortal Kombat (Super NES) – Goro

The Super NES port of Mortal Kombat was developed by Sculptured Software and published by Acclaim Entertainment (in North America and Europe) and by Acclaim Japan for the Japanese market in 1993. The original arcade game was developed by Midway and released in 1992.

Goro playthrough

In the Super NES port of Mortal Kombat, Goro is an unplayable boss. With in-game glitch and cheating device, it is possible to play as him, but will be glitched compared to what the CPU can do. However, in 2019, a hack was done on the game, named Mortal Kombat Champion Edition, allowing Goro, Shang Tsung and Reptile to be playable as intended, with the cost of minor glitches.

To select Goro, you must hold the Select Button while selecting Johnny Cage.

His move set is very simple. Pressing Low Punch or High Punch will cause him to perform his strong punch that sends his opponent far from him. Pressing Low Kick or High Kick will allow him to throw his projectile, which has the same damage and property has the other projectile, unlike in the original Arcade game. Goro will do his winning pose taunt if you press Back or Down. His uppercut has no delay, meaning he can do it over and over. Finally, simply jumping toward his opponent will activate his stomp move (but it is blockable).

Goro has two throws: His regular one and his unique Punch and Grab that is done by pressing High Punch when close to the opponent.

He is powerful and broken. He has no delay between his move and he can grab an opponent in the air as well as on the ground. He will easily clear the game in no time. His main disadvantage is that it is very difficult for him to evade the projectile. Doing flawless victory is a matter of luck, as the CPU has a tendency to throw a projectile right at the beginning of the match.

Goro second palette is glitched (since he was not intended to be playable). Player 2 will be completely black (like Noob Saibot in later games). Some graphical glitches are also present.

Goro’s two throws and his stomp won’t work against himself or Shang Tsung (for the latter move, it will simply act as a regular jump).

Despite the fact that the Finish Him/Her sequence will show up against the regular character, Goro doesn’t have a fatality and his uppercut doesn’t count as a Stage Fatality on The Pit. This also means that he is the only character that cannot fight Reptile in any circumstance. His Mirror Match battle will always be against Johnny Cage at the Pit Bottom.

As a side note, Goro doesn’t have an ending or a “regular” profile like the playable character. The author of the hack simply skips these screens as soon as his ID is loaded in the memory.
